UK Traveller Survey Reveals The Demise of Mates Breaks: Family Holidays ‘In’ With Gen Z, Yet Adventurous Retirees Prefer Solo Jaunts

A survey of UK holidaymakers by travel brand El Camino Bracelets, has revealed that the tide has turned on breaks with mates, as younger generations prefer to holiday with family, in stark contrast with midlifers and retirees, who prefer to forget the friends and family, and travel with a partner or solo.

El Camino surveyed more than 1500 Brits*, asking who they prefer to travel with and where they would like to go, and the surprising results show that just 14% preferred to holiday with friends. Far from the young being intrepid roamers, only 15% of Gen Z travellers (under 24 years of age) were keen to travel solo, with 41% of Gen Z-ers favouring family travel. Just 22% of Generation Z travellers preferred to holiday with mates. The survey also found that it was actually those recently retired or nearing retirement (65+) who preferred to travel solo, a significant 19%, or just to travel with a partner – 52%. Fewer than 1 in 5 of the oldest travellers polled preferred to holiday with their wider family.

The survey revealed contrasts in destinations favoured by different generations too. Despite not wanting to travel independently, Australia was top of the travel wishlist for Gen Z (22%), whereas Canada (11%) and New Zealand (8%) topped the wish list for 45-54 year old travellers. Japan was also very popular, featured in the top 3 destinations on the bucket list of all age groups of travellers. Australia and New Zealand and Iceland also topped the list as the favourite three countries already visited by the travellers surveyed.

Commenting on the results, El Camino Bracelets Founder, Candace Kellough, said; “Our survey did throw up some surprising results. Older travellers are sharing that their yearning to travel and see new things doesn’t just disappear, and I’m pleased to see the desire for solo and partner travel is so strong amongst recent retirees. Perhaps younger travellers prefer to travel with their family as that means their parents or grandparents are more likely to pay? Totally understandable with the cost of living crisis. This could also be why older travellers prefer to leave the family at home as they roam, so they can then afford to spoil themselves a bit more.”

“Our El Camino community of travellers spans a wide age range, and all are very passionate about travel, where they’ve been to and where they plan to visit next. The popularity of Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan and New Zealand in the survey also mirrors the destinations ordered by our customers to feature as Steps on their El Camino Bracelets. It’s great to see that so many firm favourites of the El Camino team made the travel lists too.”

El Camino Bracelets prices start from £26.99 for bracelets, £34.99 for necklaces, and Steps from £10.49. To find out more, visit www.elcaminobracelets.com.

About El Camino Bracelets:
Founded in 2013 by Candace Kellough and Tom Lane, El Camino Bracelets is based in Newquay, Cornwall.

Candace and Tom first had the idea for a bracelet that could record their travels, adventures and experiences whilst hiking the coastline between Barcelona and Monaco in 2013.

On returning to Tom’s parents’ home in Oxfordshire they began to handmake a few of the bracelets that they’d talked about, with beads engraved by a local craftsman to show the destinations and dates of adventures that the wearer had been on. The original batch of bracelets were given to close friends and family and they chose the name, El Camino, to pay homage to the Spanish roots of the project.

Much time has passed since the first drawings of an El Camino bracelet were created in a tent near Sa Tuna. Today the beads, or ‘Steps’, are still engraved by the same man in Oxfordshire, but the company headquarters is on the north coast of Cornwall. Wearers can now choose from several different colours of bracelet or necklace, adding Steps from over 200 different countries, countless destinations, regions, seas, adventures and the five world oceans.

COASTAL SKIPPER ANNE GRACIE GUNN SHARES FIVE SAILING TRIPS THAT MAKE THE ISLE OF SKYE A SUMMER HOTSPOT

June 2023 – Sailing around the Isle of Skye is one of the best ways to explore West Scotland’s diverse coastline with over 44 uninhabited islands, countless sheltered coves and abundant quiet anchorages.

Skye is relatively unexplored by sailors and cruisers and local experienced Coastal Skipper Anne Gracie Gunn, owner of three luxury boutique properties on Skye each inspired by her love of the sea and island life, has shared her five top sailing trips to make the most of visiting the majestical North West Scotland’s coastline.

From mooring in Loch na Dal, Lat 57.09.500N, Long 05.47.700W on Skye’s southern Sleat Peninsula for a shower and spot of lunch at Anne’s award-winning property Duisdale House Hotel, to enjoying five-night trips exploring the world heritage site St Kilda Archipelago and the Island of Hirta, there’s a trip for all sailing enthusiasts, from beginners to more experienced sailors.

Day Trip – Islands of Rum, Canna and Eigg on the Small Isles
The Small Isles offer the perfect day trip, each one filled with its own character and places to explore. My favourite spots include anchoring at South Bay on Eigg, usually the first island from the South of Sleat and a great spot to jump ashore or exploring the beautiful beaches of Canna Island. On the return journey to Sleat, the island of Rum is a must-visit for a tour around Kinloch Castle and the village shop and perhaps a taste of the island’s own Askival Rum.

Overnight Trip – Inverie Village on the Knoydart Peninsula
Found on the northern side of Loch Nevis, Inverie is a truly magical place with around 100 residents and accessible only by boat. It’s known as one of the last wildernesses of Europe and is a great choice for a day’s sailing trip with peaceful overnight anchorage. A visit to the community-owned Old Forge, famous for being the most remote pub in the UK, is an absolute must and the coastal landscape is unforgettable.

Two-night Trip – Waternish Peninsula and Portree
For a longer route, I love heading round Neist Point and on to Waternish on the Northwestern tip of Skye which boasts one of Scotland’s best restaurants, Loch Bay and hopefully enjoy a sunset and star gazing, which can be viewed from the comfort of your boat. On the second night, Skye’s capital Portree is a great choice for overnight mooring.

Five-night Trip – Islands of St Kilda on the Outer Hebrides
For the more experienced sailor, Hirta, the largest of the St Kilda islands, is truly remote and a fantastic choice for unspoilt and wild coastline. Named a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s the perfect spot for wildlife spotting with the largest Gannet colony in the world. My ideal journey includes a first stop at Lochmaddy for an overnight stay at the pontoon and then sailing along the coast to approach the Sound of Harris, a shallow channel, then out to the wild open sea and the relatively long passage to the picturesque and historic Village Bay to drop anchor for the third night. For fantastic cliff scenery this whole area is breathtaking including the dramatic Boreray, and the sea stacks – Stac an Armin 196 mtr and Stac Lee 172 mtr are a must visit before sailing back via Rodel in Harris to Portree for the final night.

‘Ship Ashore’ Lunch or Dinner at Duisdale House Hotel on Sleat
Our very own luxury boutique property Duisdale House Hotel also has five sheltered yacht moorings in the bay, just 100m from the property in a beautiful, secluded and sheltered bay  and is the perfect choice to freshen up and enjoy our highland hospitality. We openly welcome visiting yachts to use our facilities including showers, a well-stocked, beautiful Chart Room Bar, free Wi-Fi and award-winning restaurant serving delicious locally sourced food. Moorings are £15 per night and use of shower facilities are £7.50 including fresh towels and toiletries, or if dining in our 2 AA rosette restaurant, then the mooring is offered free of charge. JUST HOW SUSTAINABLE ARE UK AIRPORTS? APH.COM AND UNIVERSITY OF SURREY REVEAL UK AIRPORTS LEADING THE NET-ZERO REVOLUTION
