Summer 2018 is set to be a masterpiece of a summer for art-lovers planning to visit Philadelphia, with an exciting schedule of art shows and festivals taking place during the warmer months of the year.

Famous for its prominent art scene, the World Heritage City of Philadelphia boasts multiple world-famous museums such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Barnes Foundation. In summer 2018, Philadelphia and the surrounding area will play host to several inspiring art festivals and shows, including the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival and Brandywine River Museum of Art’s Antiques Show, which will both take place in May. Later, in June, the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show will host live art demonstrations and display works from global artists.

Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival: May 2018
Celebrating East Kensington’s mix of local artists, musicians and eateries, the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival promises an eccentric programme of activities to honour the creative spirit of Philadelphia. Taking place in May 2018 and organised by the volunteers of the East Kensington Neighbors Association, the festival will feature artistic works, including ceramics, jewellery and paintings, from over 200 local arts vendors. Alongside the Arts Festival, the Kinetic Sculpture Derby is regarded as one of the city’s quirkiest spring events and will see local businesses race against each other in human-powered parade floats through a mud pit. The festival and derby will take place in May 2018 and both are free and open to the public at Trenton Avenue and East Susquehanna in Philadelphia. Brandywine River Museum of Art’s Antiques Show: 26 – 28 May 2018
Located just a 50-minute drive southwest of Philadelphia, the Brandywine River Museum of Art will host its annual Antiques Show during Memorial Day Weekend in May 2018. Alongside decorative arts, glass and needlework, the show will also provide a platform for prominent antiques dealers to showcase traditional American furniture from the local region and beyond. Housed in a renovated mill, the museum itself provides guests with unmatched views of the Brandywine River and following a browse of the antiques, art-fans are encouraged to explore the museum’s collection which is renowned for its nineteenth- and twentieth-century American art. Cost of admission to the Antiques Show is around £13 ($18). For more information, visit www.brandywine.org/museum.

Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show: 1 – 3 June 2018
Held in the first weekend of June on 18th and Walnut Streets, the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show is regarded as one of the most respected and active outdoor art shows in the US. Founded by a small group of art students in 1928, the show is now steeped in rich history and tradition and allows professional artists to share their art around the perimeter of the city’s famous Rittenhouse Square, with students filling the centre of the park. Together with their works of art, artists will also present workshops and demonstrations, offering travellers the chance to watch and discuss techniques with influential artists from around the world. The Fine Art Show will take place from 1 – 3 June 2018 and is open to the public with no admission cost. For more information, visit www.rittenhousesquareart.com.
