The Maldives Tourist Board, which celebrated its 34th participation at World Travel Market this year having first exhibited in 1984, welcomed an even larger stand and delegation than ever before with 169 delegates from 65 companies from across the Maldives tourism sector attending the show.

The Maldives contingent was led by H.E. Ahmed Shiaan, Ambassador of the Maldives to UK, Belgium and EU, and Mr Mohamed Haris, Acting Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation (MMPRC), with meetings taking place with key airline partners such as British Airways, Oman Air and Emirates to discuss opportunities of increasing tourism to the Maldives from the UK.

With several major infrastructure transformations and new tourism developments taking place in the Maldives during the final months of 2018 and into 2019, WTM also provided the perfect platform to engage with key travel trade media through a series of interviews arranged with TTG, Travelmole, Selling Travel and Breaking Travel News.

Visitors to the Maldives stand were treated to a taste of Maldivian culinary delights and a virtual reality experience providing a glimpse into the natural beauty the Maldives has become famous for. One lucky travel agent was also offered the opportunity to win a five-night accommodation prize with MO Hotels and Resorts in the Maldives through an on-stand competition with the lucky winner announced on the last day of the show.

This year has been a huge success for the Maldives with a number of award wins including Indian Ocean’s Leading Beach Destination’, ‘Indian Ocean’s Leading Dive Destination’ and ‘Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination’ at the Annual World Travel Awards, the award for ‘Seven Star Destination Winner’ at the 2018 Seven Stars Luxury Hospitality and Lifestyle Awards and World’s Best Spa Destination’ at the 2018 World Spa Awards.
